Suited only to robust 4x4s and experienced drivers, this short but adventurous route starts at Mount Moorosi and ends at Ongeluksnek Pass on the border with South Africa. Its focal point is Lake Letsie, a scenic Afroalpine sump that is listed as Lesotho’s only Ramsar wetland site and protected in the remote Letseng-la-Letsie Nature Reserve.
Highlights
Mount Moorosi has a stunning location overlooking the wide gorge carved by the Senqu (Orange) River. It is also the site of one Lesotho’s most important 19th-century battlefields.
An excellent day trip from Mount Moorosi leads to the Tsatsane Valley, where a quartet of superb prehistoric rock art sites can be found close to remote cliffside nesting colonies of Cape and beaded vulture.
Reached by a spectacular but challenging dirt road through the Makoae River Gorge, pretty Lake Letsie supports a varied birdlife including blue crane, southern bald ibis, pied avocet and Drakensberg rockjumper.
The four-hour round hike from Lake Letsie to the tall Majoana Mabedi Falls is recommended to keen walkers.
