This route follows a series of surfaced roads through the relatively low-lying west of Lesotho to take in all its main historical and cultural sites.
Running from north to south (or vice versa) it passes through the kingdom’s six main towns: Butha Buthe, Leribe, Maseru, Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing.
A wealth of enriching historic, cultural and paleontological sites can be explored along this route, ranging from war relics to dinosaur footprints. It also offers opportunities for thrilling horseback, mountain bike and 4x4 adventures through green meadows overlooked by glowing sandstone escarpments.
Highlights:
Thaba Bosiu, the fortified mountain stronghold and burial place of King Moshoeshoe I, offers many insights into Basotho history.
The bustling town of Leribe is the site of ancient dinosaur footprints and the late 19th-century
Major Bell’s Tower, while Leribe Craft Centre sells wonderful mohair products handwoven on site.
The 19th century mission at Morija is the site of the Morija Museum and Archives, as well as Lesotho’s oldest standing building, Maeder House, built in 1843.
Malealea Lodge, reached by the Gate of Paradise Pass, is a chilled-out base for pony trekking, mountain biking, hiking and cultural tours.
