This route leads by road from Maseru south to Malealea, then entails a multi-day pony or foot trek across otherwise inaccessible rural mountains to Semonkong, before driving back to Maseru via Roma.
In addition to offering views over the sensational Maletsunyane Falls, the route offers some great opportunities for day hikes, mountain biking excursions and abseiling. But its highlight, unique to Lesotho, is the opportunity to explore the kingdom’s wonderful mountain landscapes on horseback, overnighting in traditional Basotho villages where the welcome is as warm as the campfire.
Highlights
Malealea Lodge is best known as a base for pony-trekking excursions, but it is also a super-chilled place to spend a few days exploring the surrounding countryside - and its wealth of prehistoric rock art and waterfalls - on guided foot or cycling excursions.
Maletsunyane Falls, outside Semonkong, is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Southern Africa at 192 metres, and it is also the site for the world’s highest commercial abseiling adventure,
Coming from and back to Maseru, you can visit two historic missions. The protestant mission at Morija is the oldest in the country, founded in 1833, while its Catholic counterpart in Roma was established in 1862.
