Sani Pass, which switchbacks uphill from the South African town of Underberg to Lesotho’s spectacular Sani Top, is entrenched as perhaps the most popular 4x4 route in Southern Africa. Less well-known is that Sani Top is also the springboard for an equally scenic and even more challenging route to Sehlabathebe via the rugged Matabeng Pass.
Suited only to hardcore mountain bikers, or to 4x4s with experienced drivers, this route is notable for its panoramic views and natural splendour.
It also connects with the Highland Ski Route (which ends at Sani Top) and one could continue on from Sehlabathebe to Qacha’s Nek for the Southern Rustic Route or the Quthing Valley Route.
Fuel and supplies are available in the small towns of Thaba Tseka and Mokhotlong
