The Highlands Circular Route offers a little bit of everything, from Qiloane Falls near Sebiteng, to the Ha Baroana rock paintings. Soak up the rejuvenating power of nature at the Bokong Nature Reserve or go boating on Katse Dam.
Traversing some of the highest and most scenic surfaced roads in Southern Africa, this route passes through an ever-changing landscapes of mountain vistas, highland passes and shimmering blue lakes. Adventure and exciting sightseeing are complemented by remote rural villages that provide close up encounters with the Basotho people.
Highlights
Physical high points include the 2,263-metre Bushman’s Pass, the 2,281-metre Molimo Nthuse (‘God Help Me’) Pass, the 2,633-metre Thaba Putsoa (‘Blue Mountain’) Pass and the 3,090-metre Mafika Lisiu Pass.
Bokong Nature Reserve is best-known for the 60-metre high Lepaqoa Falls, which often freezes in winter to form a column of solid ice.
Engineers can marvel at the impressive Katse and Mohale Dams, both of which form part of the ambitious Lesotho Highland Water Project. Boats are available to explore the associated reservoirs.
The Malibamat’so and Pelaneng Rivers upstream of Ha Lejone offer excellent fly-fishing for brown and rainbow trout.
